TMA1433 - Induction to Professional Platforms in Art & Communication

Wednesday 20th January 2021

Today I started term 2 of my Masters degree with the University of Huddersfield. We started the morning with a small catch up and general chat with our lecturers, then Sara Nesteruk started the session with a mini symposium based on 'Beethoven's 13th Note' and how you can link creative practices together. For example Sara showed the graphical structure of cords and colour charts of a piece of music, using one colour for each note.

After Sara had finished her talk she introduced Leighton a guest speaker that had come online to speak to the class on on finding structure within music and composition and graphic scores. Speaking about how graphics can create musical art forms, how to create and abandon pieces of work and how introducing the class to Anna Meredith who writes and draws her feeling of the music in text and shapes before continuing her creativity.

Leighton also introduced us to 'An Invitation to Collaborate' a network of creativities that have show in their own ways of how to show graphical scores and these are all in unique ways, using colour structures and visual imagery. Moving onto 'Music and Math' Leighton started to introduce the way art, math and music all relate together and how you can make it creative in its structure of chords and language.

Starting again at 1pm, we we're introduced to Richard Holman a former BBC writer and colleague. He started his presentation by asking the class 'what sound does a dog make?'

This was something quite strange to be asked but he stated that if you think about it, unless you speak English the answer is completely different. This test was to show us the difference you don't think about and then started to introduce different ways in advertising, showing images of VW adverts, a video of the Marmite Gene Reporting advertisement and the famous meme of the painting of Jesus that was 'restored' terrorably. Holman wanted us to see and learn that mistakes are okay and some times mistakes are the best thing for your creation, to start your creation you must be in the correct mind set and start to gather inspiration and research.

"Take the brief you have apart and examine this piece by piece", this stuck with me when Holman stated this and it gave me a sense of reflection on past briefs that I haven't done this before and made me think what could my outcome have been if I did?

Finally, Holman shared with the class the work of Jacqui Kenny and the Streetview.portraits Instagram page. Showing how someone with anxiety can still create photographic work from her home, using google maps street view to capture images and sharing to Instagram with her 133k followers.

Finally to finish today's session we gathered in groups of around 8 peers to introduce ourselves and our creative practice. I started my turn by introducing who i was and what subject field I am in, along with the fact I studied as an undergrad at the University for the past 4 years. I then explained what my final project will be about, stating my intentions and the way in which I will conduct my investigation and research study. I created a small one page back to front zine for this peer review and also listened to my peers project proposals and heard new ways in which creatives are making work during this 3rd lockdown.
