Crit Group Review #1
Todays session was the start of the crit group session that will take place over the terms module, these are session that as students we can submit images, videos, designs or research to the lecturers and present these to our crit groups. The aim of these group sessions are to help others get an understanding of my project and ideas for the final term, the starting points of my creative ideas and techniques in which I plan to use during the term. This is a great way to gain peer feedback on my project work and research during the module along with some professional feedback from guest speakers and artists. We started the day quickly by moving into our crit group teams meetings and my session was run by Alex Coles a guest speaker from the previous weeks of the module, I started to present my work after 5 or 6 other students. Firstly, I started by stating who I am and what discipline I practice and being a creative photographer coming from the University undergrad program. The images I had sent to be part of the powerpoint was a slide on some general public research that I had created via Survey Monkey online and then a slide on some black and white micro photography as a starting point to my project. Alex was interested in the questionnaire that I had made and wanted to know more about this and how t would link to my final production, I stated that I believe its important to get every side of the story for my project (looking at the affects of Covid-19 and the beauty industry) not just knowing how businesses have been affected but how the public has been affected with these businesses closing and that sense of community cancelled. I explained where I wanted my project to go and what further research I am currently undergoing to add to this project, looking at speaking with UK beauty business owners and a beauty supply business by conducting interviews and meeting with these owners over team calls. This will be a chance for me to get their understanding and of how Covid has affected their businesses and lives, learning their emotions and actions during lockdowns and how they are making their business survive during this pandemic. Below are the twos images that I presented and spoke about in my crit review along with a screenshot of my general public survey...
Collins, G University of Huddersfield. (2021). Crit Group Review [Nikon].
I wanted to show something new for this first crit group along with some research showing what I am planning on doing for the module and next terms final project. The images are shot using a Nikon D500 with one single soft box light above the objects, shot in colour and then covered to black and white in Adobe Photoshop for post production. I like the use of close up and macro photography as I have had great success with this in my final year of my degree and wanted to experiment with his again in a home studio environment. Linking the images to the beauty industry by photographing face powder and a hair brush but to the viewer this can look like two completely different objects to what they really are as this was pointed out to me in my review. I got great feedback on the general public survey from Alex like I stated before but also from the student peers, I was told that this was a great way to communicate feelings and emotions from both sides of the argument and given advice to carry on finding this out.
Overall, the session went well for me but I do plan on showing more in detail and better imagery for the second crit group in three weeks time.
