Todays session started at 1pm and held by Roddy Hunter with Ryan Durrant, Jamie Collier and Stephen Calcutt. We started with a quick 15 minute check in with all students on the MA course, then Roddy handed over to Ryan who is based in fine art and drawing as this session was based on drawing. Ryan started by showing us a video of Amy Sillman, she presented a powerpoint slide on pieces of art that meant something, for example images that enlarge, fool, plot or map out ideas.

Ryan then started by sharing some artists that work in drawing and how lines and shapes create work and also how do these artists create the shapes involved, what materials and reasons for doing this etc. I love the work of Robert Morris, Andy Goldsworthy, Barbara Hepworth and Richard Long and the shapes that these artists have created and want to incorporate this in my practice somehow.

Andy Goldsworthy
Andy Goldsworthy uses all kinds of natural materials such as stones, leaves, water and soil. His work is temporary but captured by camera to showcase afterwards, because of this natural artwork nature soon takes the materials back and the piece is gone from it's starting place. The colours used in Goldsworthy's work are always bold and bright using reds, yellows and greens or natural tones like beige, browns and greys. I first learnt of Andy Goldsworthy in year 9 GCSE art class and worked on profile pages of artists, I created a page on Goldsworthy trialing out some creative techniques of his work using small stones, leaves and hot glue to create experiments. Looking back on his work now as a masters student and more inclined with art and photography practice I appreciate his use of shape and structure more, the circle in most of his art pieces are more noticeable to me and draw me in closer to his work with nature but also how nature has provided the materials for him to be able to create his artwork.

Richard Long
Bristol born artist, Richard long is a highly successful artist with exhibitions around the world throughout his whole career starting in 1968 to the present. He has had solo exhibitions in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Amsterdam, presenting his work that include sculptures, drawings and documentation. Below I have come across some of his sculptures from around the world working with natural materials, stones, wood and slate, creating these circular shapes of out these materials. I link this to the work of Andy Goldsworthy as they both wok with line and shape, specifically the circular shape and see a connection to the artists from the similar pieces of work. I like working with line and shape and want to incorporate shape and patterns into my project and research.

After showing us the artist research and learning that art can be created for any reason with any material and also for any purpose, we started to get creative and were asked to get some paper and pens in front of us and listen for the directions to complete. Ryan started by asking us to have paper and two pens, one in each hand and draw small lines one after the other starting in the middle of the paper and working our way out and doing this continuously until a 5 minute timer stopped. Bare in mine we had to keep our eyes closed whilst drawing for the whole 5 minutes. My results...
My experiment from Ryan's direction.
Second experimental drawing - this was similar to the first but we had to draw lines down then across and up and across and repeated this for 3 minutes, again eyes closed.
Experiment #2 from Ryan's session.
I see my work in front of me and all I see are lines, but nice, colourful lines and lines that can be utilised into my imagery and a way to learn how to collaborate with drawing and photographs. I really enjoyed this session as it felt for the first time I was being creative and making physics work since the start of this MA course. I chose these two colours as to me they seem very different in colour and nowhere near similar and that once I had finished I would come out with something bright and colourful instead of just dull pencil tones or blue ink.
I took a lot from Ryan's session and rather enjoyed the physical drawings and this week I want to start incorporating these practices into my image making and editing.
